Is the internship paid or unpaid?
This is an unpaid internship.

How long does it last?
6 months - with the potential to offer an optional renewal for an additional 6 months for a total of one year.

Where does the internship take place?
The internship is entirely online - communication among the team happens in our company Discord Server as do our team meetings and video calls.

What will I need to participate in the internship?
- a game capable PC that can run Unreal Engine 5 and access the internet*
- a variety of software we'll add you to in the course of your onboarding including Discord, Github Desktop, Visual Studio, Unreal Engine Source, and Nuclino
- A solid work ethic, self reliance, passion, a desire to succeed, consistency, and good communication skills
*IF you do not have a game development capable PC you may still apply but let us know in your application. For select, accepted candidates we may be able to provide a laptop on temporary loan for the duration of the internship.*

What happens if my request for internship is not accepted?
You can reapply in 90 days. Rejection is never ideal but it's a completely normal part of the job application process. We reject more requests for internship than we accept, and this can be for a variety of factors that may or may not have anything to do with the applicant personally.

What are the key take-aways from being an intern with Dotware?
The value of any internship includes providing something relevant in the intern's area of study for their resume and portfolio, but the primary benefit from interning with us is a true, deep immersion in contemporary game development that you would be unlikely to find elsewhere (without naming company names, we've had interns switch from other studios to us because of their 'responsibilities' as glorified paperwork filers!)

Our skills in development are sought after by a great many people both aspiring and pros alike as a result of years spent developing software. When you intern with us, our skills, techniques, processes, and secrets become yours to take with you beyond your internship into the freelance market, your own independant game development, or studio work. The key factor in your success will be that you apply yourself in the course of your internship - the hard skills are learned as a result of doing the job.

When does the team meet?
There are two mandatory weekly meetings:

-
Dev Call | Fridays at 4PM PST (our long meeting)
This dev call is where we showcase and go over that week's work completed by all the departments. This meeting can last several hours.

-
Strategy Meeting | Mondays at 1:30PM PST (short, < 20 minutes max)
This is for a review of that weeks needs and for team members to sync up with other team members for their own planned meetings.

Additional small breakout meetings get scheduled throughout the week as needed among team members and departments according to their availabilities.

Can I be an intern if I'm under the age of 18?
Yes, but we will require parental / guardian sign off on the internship agreement.

What are the expectations of interns?
We have high expectations for all members of Dotware. Professional expecations include things like not being late to meetings and checking Discord everyday, as well as extra-professional expectations like investing in one's skills over time through research and study of your subject area outside outside your responsibilities on the project.
What happens if it doesn't work out?
The internship can be terminated anytime by either party.
We reserve the right to discontinue an internship at any time for any reason, but particularly this will happen if professional expecations are not being met.
