This isn't a real person and it's not AI - it's a digital Metahuman using our custom-built procedural animation system that programmatically simulates mental and physiological states with values in the character's environment. Using a digital Metahuman from Epic Games, our new approach to game animation foregoes traditional methods of using keyframed animation assets and instead simulates physiological and mental states on the character at game time that drive its animation characteristics - most notably seen here in the eyes which flit between points of interest as if thinking. Breathing is driven too not by an animation asset but by inhale and exhale events as directed by a breathes per minute value that can change during game time, and heartbeat is simulated the same. This is a research project of ours that we are actively developing (one of several) that reimagines the way game systems are made. To learn more our innovations in Unreal Engine, read on.
